“It is typical of him to wind up where you would least expect: a Jewish-born Catholic priest, poet and womanizer, grocer and bookseller, professor and librettist, born in the mid-eighteen century in an ancient hill town near Venice, but buried here in this rackety, depressed suburb of New York, with the jets into JFK roaring overhead. (…) This model immigrant, credited with introducing Italian opera and literature to the United States, the first Professor of Italian at New York’s Columbia University, now lies among vaudeville and silent-movie stars, boxers and baseball players, senators and mobsters.”
